NEWPORT NEWS, Va. — The U.S. Navy says it's trying to figure out what led to faulty welding on ships that were built or repaired at Newport News Shipbuilding. On Sept. 30, the shipyard's president, Jennifer Boykin, released a statement, saying leadership discovered the quality of welds on some submarines and aircrafts were faulty.

NAVAL BASE SAN DIEGO, Calif. – At one point this summer, four of the Navy’s nine big-deck amphibious assault ships sat at their home berths on San Diego Bay. USS Boxer (LHD-4), currently deployed in the western Pacific, had returned for emergency rudder repairs done pierside at the base. USS Essex (LHD-2) was going through maintenance and upgrades that stretched over two years, including a 12-month dry-docking selected restricted availability. USS Makin Island (LHD-8) has been going through maintenance and upgrades in a selected restricted availability. USS Tripoli (LHA-7) was cycling back into underway periods after its post-deployment Selected Restricted Availability, which it completed in March five days ahead of schedule at the base’s Pier 13.

The program is available to both Officers and Enlisted. a. Officer Applicants. Participation is open to all Active Duty and Training and Administration of the Reserve (TAR) unrestricted line, restricted line, and staff corps officers in the permanent grades of O-3 through O-5. The selection process will focus on individual performance, promotion potential, academic and subspecialty qualifications, needs of the Navy, and availability for follow-on assignment. Officers with permanent change of station orders already issued will not be considered. All officer applicants must contact their detailers for counseling on the career impact of participation in the Legislative Fellowship Program. Officers should plan for an immediate follow-on utilization tour or assignment upon completion of the fellowship, in line with Ref (a). b. Enlisted Applicants. Participation is open to all Active Duty Navy ratings in the permanent grades of E-7 through E-9. The selection process will focus on individual performance, promotion potential, academic and additional qualifications, needs of the Navy,and projected rotation date. Sailors with permanent change of station orders already issued will not be considered. Following the fellowship, Sailors will be assigned to a single 24-month utilization tour supporting a role determined by the Office of Legislative Affairs (OLA). c. All military applicants must be available for permanent change of station assignment to the Washington, DC, area in November 2025. Following orientation at OLA, fellows will begin a 12-month assignment in January 2026 in a Congressional office. In accordance with reference (b), upon execution of orders, fellows must agree in writing to serve on active duty following completion or termination of the fellowship for a period of three times the duration of the fellowship. d. The unemployment rate for the generation of veterans who served after the Sept. 11, 2001, terror attacks fell by a full percentage point to 2.5% in a September hiring surge that added 254,000 jobs to the nation's payrolls, the Labor Department reported Friday. For all veterans, the jobless rate also came down significantly from 3.5% in August to 2.7% in September, and the rate for women veterans, which had spiked to 7% in August, fell to 4.3% in September, according to the Labor Department's Bureau of Labor Statistics.

Iran-linked website targets vets with disinformation, think tank warns

Leaders of a Washington think tank urged veterans this week not to trust information posted to the fake news website “Not Our War,” which the group claims is attempting to stir up antidemocratic sentiments among veteran voters ahead of the November presidential election. The website was one of nearly two dozen flagged in a recent report by the Foundation for Defense of Democracies, a research group focusing on foreign policy and national security. The group warned that Iranian operatives were trying to pass off the sites as legitimate news outlets and use the content to cast doubt on America’s democratic process.
